Eardrum perforation =

= agonising, throbbing pain (left ear + left molars and pre-molars on u./l. jaw), ghastly night, begging chemist for SOMETHING, I DON'T CARE WHAT at 1 am, and parting w an astonishing amount of money for ER visit + medication the next afternoon, despite medical insurance. Misfit, I remember you had this pleasure a while ago. Thankfully our doctors do not find it odd that adults have the occasional otitis and I am already medicated not quite 24 h later. Oh the fucking pain of it! Feeling better but still pissy, all I did was wash my bloody hair.

SATURDAY, 8.30 am:

Ouch......

I do know how you feel. I've had both my eardrums perforated at different times. The total is; 5 times on the left and 4 on the right, and so far, no permanent damage or hearing loss.

Try a cotton ball just covering the outside of the ear canal, or as shallow as you can manage in the ear canal. That will absorb any leakage, and will also muffle the sounds hitting the ear drum. The worst part for me is how painful hearing through the affected ear. It might take some time for that sensitivity to sound to fade, but it will.

I have a good doctor now who knows to give me powerful decongestants when I have sinus problem.

Oh, and keep the ear covered when bathing and washing your hair. You don't want water in that ear. I was able to find some silicone plugs, well, more like some silicone putty... that you can use to seal the ear. Much better than the cotton balls and petroleum jelly I had to use before.

Good luck... and it will get better.

I'm so sorry you had to go through that! The only consolation is that it feels soooo good when the pain finally stops. Refuah Sheleimah.

Well this is crap. I've had burst blood vessels in my ear before, also crap.

But on a brighter note: you're a bit of a spunk really, arent you!

OUCH! I had one of those about 15 years ago. I woke myself screaming, literally, in the middle of the night, and it took a couple of seconds for the pain to stab through my awareness. Then I screamed some more. Poor Charles. A fist full of ibuprofen calmed things down enough for me to wait for AM and the antibiotics. No wonder little kids sob with them. So, so sorry it happened to you. Wow.

Those pix are way cool! I feel like I'm right there--nothing quite like a few idyllic beach scenes to calm the spirit. So sorry about the ear infection--feel better soon!

Ow...boy do you have my sympathy. I never had an ear infection as a child. I have gotten about 5 HORRENDOUS ear infections as an adult...but even with that, I never had a perforation. HOpe you feel better soon dear.

Oh, honey, I am so very sorry. I stand by my statement that the pain pre perforation was worse than childbirth. At least contractions ebb now and again.

My hearing is finally back to 100%. And since my doctor changed my allergy meds and I'm now getting shots (I'm allergic to my cats and they aren't going anywhere), I haven't had so much as a sniffle.

Hang in there. You're allowed to whine and be pathetic. Ear pain is horrible.

Tnx everyone, it's still pretty uncomfortable but am not taking as many pain pills anymore so it must be slowly getting better. Pain was exactly the same pain I felt when w tooth abcess that was wrongly medicated, the exact same throbbing, itchy, nausea-inducing pain. Don't make me laugh in the comments [Dany, you idio!], hurts when I do. Also don0't make me hunt for Aussie slang glossaries [but tnx dahling]. Hurts more when I talk or chew so am reminded of Bones and that stupid etmoid, and am avoiding both activities. Still have water inside, sloshes sometimes (I know it's not pus bcs Dr. said it was only just starting to build up around the edges of the hole - tiny hole btw). Will never ever wash hair again without ear plugs, EVER EVER. Also forced to spray treated salt water 4XX/day, bah, blech and meh. Don't much feel like doing much. Mind rather hazy w all the different pills, sorry if not making sense. Very tired, don't know why. Drugs, maybe.

Sounds like you are not taking enough pills. Refill those prescriptions. Stay medicated.

Oooh. That ear pain is the worst. It's the only thing I ever abandoned my children for. It was the middle of the night, I couldn't sleep and had to drive myself to the ER. As a single mom, I was terrified of leaving them alone, so I called the police (we lived in a quiet suburb) and asked them to patrol the street while I was away. They said they would. And I got home before the kids woke up. Just reading the words "ear" and "pain" in the same paragraph reminds me of that terrible night. And also reminds me to say a prayer of thanks that it's over.

I can't even imagine the pain...I whine incessantly when I have a simple ear ache. How on earth did you manage breaking eardrum?

Love the pictures...love the beach. I'm jealous (but not of the perforation).
